What is Bitcoin (BTC)?
Bitcoin is the world’s largest and first functional cryptocurrency, which made it possible to send and receive money securely over the internet without relying on third parties. Bitcoin launched the technology that all other cryptocurrencies are based on and started the crypto revolution. Today, Bitcoin is the most widespread and well-established cryptocurrency, and it dominates the entire crypto market by often setting the direction for the rest of the market — although this could potentially change in the future. A popular way to refer to BTC is as “digital gold,” because it shares many of the same characteristics as gold.
