LEI requirement for corporate customers

To trade crypto using a corporate account at Firi, the company is required to have a LEI number.

If the company already has a LEI, you don’t need to do anything. Firi will automatically retrieve the number once it is registered in the global LEI database. If the company does not yet have a LEI, it must be registered before you can trade crypto with us.

On this page, we explain what a LEI is, why it is required, and how to obtain one.

What is LEI?

LEI stands for Legal Entity Identifier. It is a unique international ID number for companies and other legal entities. The number consists of 20 characters and is used to identify who participates in financial transactions, including across borders.

LEI is already used in traditional finance and is now also a requirement for companies that want to trade crypto assets.

Why does the company need a LEI at Firi?

Firi is required by law to obtain a LEI for corporate customers using crypto on our platform.

This is due to the new crypto-asset regulation (MiCA), which mandates the identification of legal entities. The goal is to make the market safer and more transparent, and to help combat financial crime.

Do you need to do anything yourself?

If the company already has a LEI, Firi will automatically retrieve it from the global LEI registry. You do not need to send the number to us. The only action required is to register for a LEI if the company does not already have one.

Does the company already have a LEI?

You can easily check in the global LEI registry at gleif.org. Companies that already trade listed stocks and funds often have a LEI already.

How to obtain a LEI

Fortunately, it is quite straightforward:

1. Choose a LEI issuer

You can choose whichever issuer you prefer, but as a Firi customer, you receive a discount on LEI from NordLEI. More information about NordLEI and the offer can be found below.

2. Register the company with the LEI issuer

Fill in the company information, including the organization number.

3. Receive the LEI Number

Once the registration is approved, your company receives a LEI number. This typically takes 1–2 business days.

4. Firi retrieves the LEI automatically

When the LEI is registered in the global registry, we retrieve it automatically. This normally happens within 1 business day. You do not need to send anything to us.

Firi, in collaboration with NordLEI, has introduced a discounted price for customers who need a new LEI or who are not currently NordLEI customers. To take advantage of this offer, please follow the link. Alternatively, you can manually enter the discount code “FIRI”.

For existing NordLEI customers:

Log in as usual at https://nordlei.org. Then enter the discount code “FIRI” at checkout when you register a new LEI or renew your existing LEI.

What happens if the company does not have a LEI?

Without a LEI, the corporate account will have limited access to crypto at Firi.

This means you will not be able to:

  • buy or sell crypto
  • transfer crypto to or from the platform

You will still be able to:

  • log in to the account
  • deposit and withdraw Norwegian kroner
